Isn't this pretty?

Photobucket

I found it on Etsy. I sent the milliner/seller a message saying how much I liked it, and she responded with, "if u r truly interested i can always barter or cut u a deal!!" And it just pissed. me. off. I'm a potential customer, and she can't even be bothered to spell out her words or use correct capitalization in her message to me? It was so irritating that it put me off the hat.

Ye gods, I loathe textspeak. :-(

I can't stand it when people do that—like they're so busy they can't take a moment to communicate like a human. I don't blame you. On a similar note... I was once contacted by a woman who was interested in carrying some of my hats in her shop. I asked for a link to her Web site and she said she had a blog and sent me a link to it. Once there I had to wade through all the inside jokes and drunken photos that she was sharing with her friends. I suppose there was a little information about the store, but I'm sure you can guess my interest.

I was really conflicted about whether I should write her back, so I finally sent this message:

After thinking about this all day, I have to tell you. Your reply really bothered me. I'm a potential customer inquiring about a piece of merchandise, so using textspeak to respond to my inquiry verges on insulting. It's as if you couldn't take the time to write out a properly spelled and punctuated response.

I wasn't going to say anything, because I didn't want to make you angry or hurt your feelings. Then I decided that I was being cowardly by not saying something, because it really did bother me.

I hope you'll take this in the spirit in which it is intended. I really do love your work.

I'm sure it stings, but she'll learn something. It's probably some of the best advice she'll be getting.
